Background IGBP

The Regional IGBP Office in Brazil began operating in May 2006.

Located within the Brazilian federal Institute for Space Research (INPE) and funded by the Brazilian government, the Regional Office right now is staffed by one Science Officer, Patricia Pinho, who work with the IGBP Chair on issues related to natural and social sciences respectively. The Regional Office is to help the IGBP execute its Science Plan and Implementation Strategy and, specifically, to increase the capillarity and synergism of the IGBP and ESSP effort throughout Latin America, and to other developing regions of the world. The Regional Office thus develops and supports regional actions, acting as liaison between the Chair, the Headquarter in Stockholm, and activities in the Latin America and other developing countries.

The Regional Office collaborates with the IGBP Central Office to support the participation of scientists (mainly from developing countries), science officers of IGBP and scientific committee members of the IGBP and associated international programs to attend national and international meetings related to global environmental change and studies revolving around geosphere-biosphere dynamic.
