• Integration and Testing Laboratory performs environmental tests on the Agentina satellite SAC-B.
  Testing of Argentine satellite SAC-B at LIT.
• INPE publishes the first Brazilian book about lightning.
• CPTEC website is awarded in Ministry of Administration and State Reform Award. It is highlighted CPTEC performance on forecast and disclosure weather phenomenon El Niño, warning society about its impacts on economic and social areas.
• Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazon begins along with other twelve foreign organizations. When INPE created LBA, it aimed to find answers about water cycle, energy, carbon, gases and nutrients in the Amazon, and determine how these cycles are changed by human being.
• The first electronic elections are held. It was developed by INPE and CTA researchers.
• At Associated Plasma Laboratory (LAP), the plasma centrifuge (PCEN) reaches angular rotation frequency of record of 8×105 radians per second.

• Dolly, the sheep, is cloned.

• The NASA spacecraft Pathfinder lands on Mars and leave the vehicle Sojourner, which analyzes the Martian geology and astronomy.
