• MCT Regimental Structure is approved and INPE became part of it as a Singular Specific Organ.
• First numerical weather forecasting in Brazil. The wide dissemination of weather forecasts throughout the country modernized this sector permanently.
• GlobeSAR program is held along with Canadian Space Agency
• Smoke, Clouds, and Radiation-Brazil (SCAR-B) experiments are held along with NASA.
  SCAR-B Project (Smoke, Clouds and Radiation - Brazil).
• Ionic Implantation by Plasma Immersion experiments (3IP) for material surfaces processing aimed at space applications.
• Molecular Beam Epitaxy System (MBE) used to grow epitaxial layers of VI-VI semiconductors was installed in Associated Laboratory of Sensors and Materials (LAS) aiming at infrared applications.
• INPE starts to build components of Spherical Tokamak Experiment – ETE – continuing activities started in 1986 with ETA project - Advanced Toroidal Experiment.
