SAREX '92: The SAREX'92 (South American Radar Experiment 1992) corresponded to huge campaign to get data from synthetic aperture radar C-band multi-polar (C-HH, C-VV, C-HV, C-VH) in Central and South America, using the sensor CCRS CV-580 (Canada Centre for Remote Sensing). The mission resources were provided by the Canadian government and ESA. The main objectives of SAREX '92 in Brazil were: (1) acquiring calibrated and high-quality SAR data that simulates the future coatings of the satellites ERS-1 (ESA) and RADARSAT-1 (Canada), (2) research information and extraction from tropical environments targets using SAR data in C-band, and (3) implement an intensive staff-training in SAR technology at INPE, considered a strategic and lacking area in Brazil.

The early '90s was a crisis time for the technological development in Brazil, especially with the end of the stock market and with the trade openness promoted by Collor administration. All institutions and companies associated with the informatics policy were strongly questioned. At that time, the INPE’s team felt necessary to review the SITIM project to not use additional graphics boards or interfaces based on menus and icons anymore.
