• LIT – Satellite Integration and Testing Laboratory. It was opened in 1987.
  Integration and Test Laboratory inauguration.
• Begins receiving data from rescue system COSPAS-SARSAT, which was essential to localize a Varig airplane that crash-landed in São José do Xingu 1998.
• First doctoral thesis about atmospheric electricity in Brazil.
• Associated Plasma Laboratory (LAP) developed tools and techniques for measuring magnetic moment of SCD-1 satellite and its subsystems. The same techniques were used later in SCD-2A, SCD-2 and SACI satellite.
• Beginning of qualification process for national solar panels provider for space use.
• Associated Plasma Laboratory (LAP) developed tools and techniques for measuring magnetic moment SCD-1 satellite and its subsystems, and satellite magnetic balancing. Same techniques were later used in SCD-2A, SCD-2 and SACI satellite.
• A hot wall epitaxy reactor (HWE) for development of optoelectronic devices, including infrared detectors networks.

  Worldwide

• A cesium capsule, removal from Radiotherapy Institute of Goias, is sold to a junkyard. It would cause the biggest radiation contamination in the country.

• The mobile phone marketing begins to expand worldwide. Currently, there are about 5 billion devices around the globe. Brazil ranks the fifth position, with about 195 million handsets.
