A plasma centrifuge (PCEN) for isotopic enrichment starts to be developed with subsequent Brazilian National Commission of Nuclear Energy support (CNEN).

Columbia space shuttle makes its maiden flight on April 12th. Columbia was the first of five reusable spacecraft developed by Americans.
