  Satellite Image Processing Laboratory in Cachoeira Paulista.
  The Satellite Images Processing Laboratory starts its activities in Cachoeira Paulista. The beginning of the images processing activities on an operational amount allowed INPE to open its distribution in commercial basis continuously
• INPE holds the 17th Meeting of the Space Research Committee (COSPAR) in Brazil
• INPE purchase, for US$ 1 million, an image processing system of GE, called “IMAGE-100”. Considered a High Technology of the time, it was controlled by a PDP/11-45 (with 128 KB of memory) and had the video memory of 512 x 512 pixel (using "shift registers" 1KB). For a long time, was the only digital processing of satellite images system operating in Brazil.

• In United States happen the largest twister sequence ever registered. During 18 hours, 148 twisters touched down killing at least 315 people.

• In July, the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz 14, manned by two astronauts, is coupled to Salyut 4 space station in orbit, returning to Earth in the same month.
